Why your website is slow (and how to fix it without rebuilding it)

A site that loads in 5 seconds loses half its visitors before they see anything. When yours is slow, it's almost never a single culprit. It's a few small ones adding up.

Weak hosting

This is the most common cause, and the easiest to fix. On a cheap shared plan with hundreds of sites on one machine, your speed depends on the neighbours. Old spinning disks versus NVMe make a huge difference on databases. And without real caching, every visit rebuilds the page from scratch.

This is also the cheapest win: moving to NVMe hosting with LiteSpeed can cut load time in half without touching the site itself. I've seen it happen plenty of times.

Oversized images

A 4 MB photo dropped straight from a phone kills your page. Resize it to the size you actually display, and save it as WebP. On WordPress, an image optimization plugin handles about 80% of this on its own.

Too many plugins

Each plugin adds its own CSS and JavaScript. Twenty plugins mean twenty brakes. "All-in-one" themes stuffed with options you never use drag things down too. Keep only what you truly need.

No caching and no CDN

Caching at the server and in the browser means the page isn't rebuilt on every visit. A CDN serves your site closer to visitors in other countries, so it arrives faster.
