How to choose web hosting in 2026: a practical guide

26 June 2026 6 min

You choose web hosting by the type of site (shared to start, VPS or dedicated as you grow) and by a few specs: NVMe storage, LiteSpeed, uptime, backups and servers in the EU. You don't need to be a systems engineer to check them, and we go through each one below.

Types of web hosting: which one fits you?

Each category has a different purpose and price:

  • Shared hosting: several sites use the resources of the same server. It's cheap and simple, good for brochure sites, blogs and small shops starting out.
  • WordPress hosting: set up for WordPress, with caching, updates and security settings already in place. Pick it if you want a fast WordPress site without touching the server yourself.
  • Reseller: for agencies and freelancers who manage several clients' sites under their own brand.
  • VPS (virtual private server): you get guaranteed resources (CPU, RAM, storage) and full access. It's the next step once you outgrow shared hosting.
  • Cloud: resources you can increase quickly when traffic spikes. A good fit for fast-growing or seasonal projects.
  • Dedicated server: a whole physical machine, yours alone. The best isolation and the most resources, for heavy applications and high traffic.

The rule I'd follow: don't pay for what you don't use, but leave room to grow. A growing online store soon hits the limits of a shared plan.

What to look for

Past the marketing labels, a few specs decide whether a site feels fast or sluggish:

  • NVMe storage: NVMe drives are several times faster than classic SSDs. Pages load faster and the database responds sooner, which matters for SEO and for sales.
  • LiteSpeed web server: LiteSpeed with its LSCache usually serves pages faster than Apache, especially on WordPress and WooCommerce.
  • Uptime in the contract: look for uptime of at least 99.9% written into the SLA. Every hour your site is down costs money and customers.
  • Automatic backups: daily copies that are easy to restore. Ask how often they run and how you get your data back.
  • Technical support: people who reply quickly, in your language, and fix the problem instead of sending you a manual link.
  • Location and GDPR: a Tier III datacenter in the EU means low latency for visitors in Romania and fewer legal questions around GDPR.

Common mistakes

These are the ones we see most often, and they cost the most:

  • Choosing on price alone. The cheapest plan often means crowded servers and support that doesn't answer.
  • Trusting "unlimited". "Unlimited" resources always come with a fair-use policy. Read it.
  • Putting off backups. Many businesses learn they have no copy on the day they lose everything.
  • Hosting outside the EU. A server across the ocean is slower for customers in Romania and makes compliance harder.
  • No plan for growth. If you can't move easily from shared to VPS or cloud, you're stuck when traffic grows.

How to migrate without downtime

Moving a site worries a lot of people, but done in the right order it doesn't take the site offline:

  • Copy first, delete last. Move the files and database to the new server before you touch anything at the old provider.
  • Test on the new server with a temporary domain or through your hosts file, to confirm everything works.
  • Lower the DNS TTL a day ahead, so the change propagates quickly.
  • Switch the DNS only after you've fully checked the new copy.
  • Keep the old server running for another 48 hours, until the change has propagated everywhere.

Many providers, including us, offer free assisted migration: the technical team handles the steps above while you get on with your work.

What I'd put first

Good web hosting goes unnoticed until it's missing. In order, I'd check for NVMe storage, a LiteSpeed server, uptime written into the contract, automatic backups and servers in the EU that are GDPR compliant. Price comes after that.

At BTU you'll find hosting plans on NVMe and LiteSpeed in a Tier III datacenter in the EU, support in Romanian and free assisted migration, plus VPS, cloud and dedicated servers when you need more. If you're not sure which plan fits, write to us and we'll tell you straight.
